March, 2010

There are bathroom concrete floors out there with different flooring.  Most floor work should be done by a professional, or an experienced do-it-yourselfer. Things can get complicated when applying the flooring.  We’re not trying to discourage our clients but help them.

The complexity or problem that may arise is during the prep, mix application.  A mistake can cost you bubbles, peeling, and separation of the epoxy floor sealant. Every inexperienced do-it-yourselfer will face this.

So you may want to consider hiring a professional to do or an experienced person that you know. The quality of these concrete floor coating are awesome, especially a mono epoxy type. The cost of these epoxy paint is affordable.

Spring is near and we’re starting to see more questions about how much does it cost to do bathroom remodel.  The service that Swansons Contracting provides cannot be catagorize at 10K.  There are many factors in figuring out the cost to do a bath remodel.

Some factors of the cost to do a bath remodel are:

  • Size 30 to 40 square feet
  • Install standard porcelain toilet
  • Apply moisture-resistent vinyl wallpaper or paint with latex paint.
  • Put in a dip-coat 60″ long porcelain/steel tub and shower combination.
  • Put in ceramic tile surround, around tub, with basic four-inch square tile.
  • Put in solid-surface counter with integrated sink.
  • Single lever shower control

The average we’re talking about here, (remember, just to do whats outlined) is around 16 to 17K.  This example is a low end, bare minimum.  We’re not talking about putting in marble floors or concrete floor coat with epoxy paint.

Old Pipes – Cast Iron

Understanding your pipes is important, the older your pipes there is a chance that it is deteriorating. Some of these older cast iron pipes rot from the inside out. So you would never know by the looks of it once its too late. So here’s a tip that you can do.

Tap lightly on the pipe with a heavy wrench or screwdriver. Listen for the tone, a change indicates that there is a buildup or the wall is corroded. Either way the pipe will need to be repair or replaced.

Galvanized Pipes

Plan on replacing the whole pipe run.  Old threaded galvanized pipe joints are usually frozen tight from corrosion and can’t be disassembled without breaking. Something to keep in mind, in other words when you’re replacing, you’ll have to replace the whole pipe run.

This is just a short blurp on hidden problems that you may have when dealing with bathrooms, and plumbing is a big one.
